[ROM development] POPCON ROM

I have a Samsung fridge that has a TV in it. This TV runs windows CE and a program called "POPCON" (I think it means popular convergence). I want to modify the rom so that I can get it to boot up with a desktop instead of the POPCON. If I need POPCON then I'll place an icon on the desktop. I can get access to the .hv files (default, boot, and such) but never worked with CE before other than my HTC Touch phone. It also runs the TV signal wireless via 802.11b and that would let me connect it to my wireless network if I want to pull down info while in the kitchen. I can get into the "Windows" folder and see explorer.exe and a whole bunch of other files, the POPCON is in its own partition or drive but there is a .exe file in the parent folder.

There are two drives
\ - I suspect this is root, size is 55megs with 51megs available, type is TFAT
popcon is the name of the other partition and it doesn't show a size but is FAT32

Almost every .ini files states "LocalizedResourceName=@\Windows\ceshell.dll,-20488" so i'm a bit lost as to how CE boots up.

Now, before you think that I paid a bundle for this, your wrong. The fridge is worth about $3,500 but since the guys a Lowes didn't have a clue how to set it up upon delivery, they brought it back and marked it down as damaged electronics for $850. I scooped it up in a heartbeat, read the book and now have a great TV with a fridge stuck to it.

If anyone could help, it would be greatly appriceated.

Exactly :)

I have run the doc_tool, and I do have the 30MB storage, but I do not need 70+MB for running programs, as most programs do not use more than 5MB a piece, I think the worst RAM hog I've ever encountered used 17MB during startup. Even video in full screen does not take up more than 20 - 25MB on a bad day, most likely it will only use 10 - 15MB of RAM.

What I would like however, is more storage RAM, 30MB is way to little for my needs, since I use a lot of programs, that needs direct memory access, like different text input programs/keyboards, task mannagers, calendar programs, etc., and I use different SD cards for different tasks, and do not want my job related files on my off time card, and visa versa (security and peace of mind).

So if it is at all possible, then even a 50/50 split of the RAM would be a huge leap into my way of using my Himalaya, but 70/30 would be much better.

The 30/70 split we get with this ROM, is a step back in time in my humble opinion, it's usable but not the best solution.

BTW. Did I mention the speed of this thing? I'm still amazed at how it out paces my iPAQ 210 powerhouse, mostly in games. That is soooo sweet :)

OK, Installed the ROM and have done a bit of testing / comparring :)

Pros:
It works, install was as sweet and easy as can be and that is sooo nice, the manual is easy to follow and running an exe file on a PC is as easy as it comes, well done!!!
Having the old girl running sleek and moddern is realy nice, and her new looks suits her :)
15,96MB of Storage (RAM Drive) is fine, and what was expected.
Some of the extra programs in the "ExtROM" folder are realy nice to have items.

However, there are a few cons:
Lots less storage space on the device, comparred to WM2003(SE), that realy sucks, since I'm used to have just about every thing but games installed on the machine, 30,53MB of storage is way too little, while 77,23MB of Program RAM is a bit of overkill imo., it should have been the other way arround, any workarounds for that?

The external hardware:
IGO BT Mouse: No go, the driver is obsolete and the BT Manager is not good enough to make it work without.
Stoweaway foldable keyboard: No go, the driver is obsolete, and there are no updates, since it's purpouse made for the Himalaya, which was never ment to run anything but WM2003.
VGA Backpack: Kind of works, the VGA-Out part and the build in battery is working, but the CF slot is not visible / accessable, but maybe a bit of tinkering with the registry might do the trick here? (haven't had the time yet).

Judgement:
If you are not having any of the external hardware, or can live without them, then here is an easy to install, and well working WM 6.1 for your device, I rely like it, and it's not as slow as expected, it actualy keeps up with my iPAQ 210 in speed and ease to use, in some parts it's even faster, than the brand new 624MHz iPAQ, how sweet is that for an 5 years old machine :)
But the lack of internal storage for programs is a real draw back.

4,5 of 6 stars from me, one more if the storage issue gets solved, and the last half if someone will make the drivers for my external expencive hardware ;)

Just before I start on my review for the Danish PPC site "Pocketfreak" I have a few questions:
The program "WM5 Storage": What does it do, and how?
Any good reason why PPT is left out of Office Mobile, and needs to be installed seperately?
